Why Koalas?

Why Koalas?

Why have we named our company and products after the koala, one of Australia’s most iconic and lovable creatures?

Koalas have been a symbol of this nation’s cultural and natural heritage for millennia, from Indigenous mythology to the mischievous Blinky Bill, the character created by author and illustrator Dorothy Wall in the 1930s. Because our company is quintessentially Australian—all our ingredients are sourced right here in Australia—it made sense to us to choose a name that was also unmistakably Australian. And because Koala Co products are 100% sourced from nature and will not damage the environment, we hope to do our bit to help safeguard the future for these little guys.

Because, sadly, Australia’s koala population is plummeting. Development is destroying their eucalypt woodland habitat, and climate change is threatening their survival. According to the Australian Koala Foundation 80% of habitat has now disappeared.

So in addition to making products that are kind to nature as well as humans, our company donates a percentage of each sale to the charity One Percent for the Planet. This environmental group is committed to protecting land, forests, rivers and oceans, and encourages sustainable methods of energy.

{Did you know?}

Koalas are marsupials, not bears. They carry their young in a pouch, like kangaroos or possums. Their diet of eucalypt leaves doesn’t give them much energy, so they tend to sleep for about 20 hours a day. In the wild, they live in the coastal areas of New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Queensland. You won’t find them in Western Australia, the Top End or Tasmania unless they’re in a sanctuary or a zoo.
