Morning, sunshine! What energises you at the beginning of the day?

Morning, sunshine! What energises you at the beginning of the day?

For some, it’s being able to embrace the silence of an early morning and not talking to anyone: no phone switched on until work starts, no conversation until the first cup of tea or coffee has performed its ‘refresh and recharge’ miracle.

For others, it’s being in the company of somebody—or something—that shares your ‘wide-awake vibe.’ This doesn't have to be a human! Take the dog for a walk, feed the cat (who no doubt will have been asking since before first light), or listen to the dawn chorus of the birds.

Scientific studies have shown that simply looking at greenery can boost mental health.[1] So even if you live in the middle of a city, if you can see trees, grass or shrubs from your window, it could be a positive way to start the day. If you work from home, can you factor in a dose of nature before you settle at your desk?

Some individuals like to keep a ‘dream diary’ to write down fragments of dreams, or even make notes of first thoughts upon waking. Our brains are emerging from an altered state. Connecting ‘thinking’ with ‘doing’ through the action of writing by hand can be a deeply pleasurable experience. And what’s written is doesn't have to be shared: that way there’s no need for self-censorship or judgement.

And if hitting the streets for a run, or spending an hour in the gym is your idea of an ideal wakeup: do it!

Whatever our preferences, tuning into what makes us feel alive and ready for the day is one of the best gifts we can give ourselves. And if that can involve connection with nature in some way, even to feel the breeze or sunshine or salt water on our faces and delay plugging into technology, so much the better!
